Traumatic Brain Injury: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Brain Recovery

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have long-term effects that extend well beyond the original injury. Even after the initial trauma has healed, people may continue to experience headaches, fatigue, sleep problems, memory difficulties, brain fog, mood changes, and problems with concentration.

As researchers learn more about the long-term effects of TBI, they are also exploring new ways to support the brain’s recovery. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an area of growing interest.

The Long-Term Impact of TBI

A recent study highlighted by Neuroscience News examined the relationship between traumatic brain injury and neurological conditions including dementia, stroke, epilepsy, and Parkinson’s disease. The findings underscore the importance of understanding TBI as more than an isolated event and recognizing the potential long-term effects on brain health.

The good news is that in the right environment, the brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and change. This process, known as neuroplasticity, allows the brain to reorganize connections and develop new pathways following injury, and the unique conditions in a hyperbaric chamber foster this.

How Does HBOT Support Brain Recovery?

HBOT involves breathing enriched oxygen in a pressurized environment. This unique environment allows oxygen to dissolve into the bloodstream at much higher levels, delivering oxygen directly to the brain and other tissues needing additional support and activating genes to stimulate healing.

Researchers are investigating a number of ways  that HBOT can benefit the injured brain, including:

  • Supporting brain oxygenation and circulation
  • Reducing inflammation and swelling
  • Supporting mitochondrial function and cellular energy production
  • Promoting neuroplasticity
  • Supporting the formation of new blood vessels and neural connections
  • Improving cognitive and neurological function

These mechanisms are particularly interesting in TBI because brain injury can disrupt blood flow, metabolism, cellular function, and communication between neurons.

What Does the Research Show?

The evidence surrounding HBOT and TBI continues to evolve, with several recent studies reporting encouraging findings.

2025 Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

In Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for neurocognitive deficits associated with traumatic brain injury researchers found that HBOT was associated with improvements in memory, attention, executive function, general cognition, information processing speed and motor skills. 

2025 Study of Long-Term Post-Concussion Symptoms

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves post-concussion symptoms in adults with childhood traumatic brain injury examined adults who had experienced TBI during childhood and continued to experience post-concussion symptoms years later. Following HBOT, significant improvements were noted in global cognition, memory, executive function, attention and information processing speed. These improvements were  independent of time since injury, suggesting that HBOT can be effective even decades after the initial trauma.

2025 Clinical Trial in Moderate TBI

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury investigated HBOT as an early addition to standard treatment in adults with moderate TBI. The Glasgow Coma Scale and Glasgow Outcome Scale–Extended are used to measure recovery and functional disability after a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Researchers reported significantly improved scores at discharge and three months after treatment when compared with standard care alone.

Recovery May Be Possible Long After the Injury

Perhaps one of the most encouraging aspects of TBI research is the growing understanding that the brain’s capacity for change can persist long after an injury. In Hyperbaric oxygen therapy improves post-concussion symptoms in adults with childhood traumatic brain injury,statistically significant improvements were observed in all cognitive domains, including global cognition, memory, executive function, attention and information processing speed and these improvements were independent of time since injury and initial TBI severity. 

While HBOT is not currently an established standard treatment for TBI in the United States, it is elsewhere. For people living with the lasting effects of TBI, the message is encouraging: the brain’s ability to recover and adapt may extend much further than we once thought. HBOT is one promising area of research helping us better understand what may be possible.
